    The Development of Medical Screening
X-ray was indentified as a possible tool for medical screening in the early 1900’s. This ground breaking research evolved and resulted in the modern X-ray equipment we find in hospitals and clinics throughout the World today.

Thorn EMI were instrumental in the development of the first MRI scanners in the early 1980’s. In the modern medical environment, MRI Scanning is one of the best diagnostic exams for many types of soft tissue including; brain, eyes, heart, liver, kidney and spleen.

Success within the Radiology and Oncology markets can be linked to the advances in clinical screening techniques such as X Ray, CT and MRI Scanning. These diagnostic machines assist medical professionals in the identification and treatment of life threatening medical conditions.

    Machine Setting and Calibration (QA)
It is essential to the medical profession that X-ray, MRI and CT equipment can be calibrated in a proven way which is reliable and repeatable. Calibration of equipment requires the use of a known standard(s) which are often referred to as Quality Assurance Phantoms.

Acrylic as a material offers properties that make it complimentary for use in the design and manufacture of medical phantoms for medical quality assurance purposes. Other plastic materials, such as polyester resin or polystyrene can also be used.

Acrylic and Plastic medical phantoms can be used to either simulate human tissue or assist in the setting, calibrating and targeting of equipment and treatments.

    What services does Carville offer?
Carville are a contract manufacturing company specialising in the heat treatment, precision machining, bonding and polishing of Perspex Acrylic and other engineering plastics.

Carville work with leading physicists and engineers within the medical industry. We have used our manufacturing and engineering knowledge to support the development and manufacture of new quality assurance phantoms for use with medical X-ray and Oncology treatments.

Quality Assurance Phantoms produced by Carville are supplied to the NHS and OEM’s. These are used to calibrate both static and mobile screening and treatment systems.

    A few facts and figures

Over 320,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in the UK each year.

More than 1 in 3 people in the UK will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime.

The main cancer treatments are surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and now Proton Therapy.

40% of patients will receive radiotherapy as part of their treatment.

Around 120,000 cancer patients in the UK, and millions worldwide, benefit from radiotherapy treatment every year.

Wordwide there are over 40 operational proton therapy centres with many more planned.

The UK Department of Health confirmed in December 2011 that proton therapy will be made available for patients in the UK through two new treatment centres, in London and Manchester. Patients will be able to have treatment in the UK from 2017.
